What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are about 1/4 inch long, with reddish-brown, oval, flattened bodies. They are easily mistaken for ticks or roaches. They feed mostly at night on the blood of people and animals.

Changes in modern pest control and the use of less effective chemicals are reasons for the increase of bed bugs.

Where do bed bugs live?

Bed bugs can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, dorm rooms and modes of transportation. They can be found almost anywhere in your house or other buildings. They can also be found in fabric and wood, not metal or plastic. Places to look include:

  • mattresses and box springs (especially in the seams or creases)

  • bed frames and headboards

  • along and under the edge of carpet (behind beds and furniture)

  • hardwood floors (check corners and cracks)

  • molding and baseboard cracks

  • behind picture frames and wall hangings

  • switch plates and outlets

  • under loose wallpaper and paneling

  • clothing stored in closets and drawers

  • inside clocks, phones, TVs and smoke detectors

  • cloth chairs and sofas (check seams, skirts and under cushions)

Information for Tenants

Notify your landlord of your bed bug concerns right away. Bed bug treatment may be up to the tenant or the landlord. More information may be available in the terms of your lease agreement. The Missouri Attorney General’s Office has developed a booklet about landlord and tenant rights and responsibilities.

This booklet can be viewed by visiting: Missouri’s Landlord-Tenant Law: The Right and Responsibilities of Landlords.
